Families Turn to In-Home Academic Programmes Amid Rising Bullying and Well-Being Concerns
August 18, 2025 @ 3:00 pm

Kuala Lumpur, 15 August 2025 – A convergence of high-profile incidents, ranging from bullying to rare but alarming safety risks, has led more families in Malaysia to explore in-home academic programmes, where vetted teachers deliver structured lessons in the safety of students’ homes. What used to be seen as a premium offering is now increasingly accessible, melding academic continuity with a controlled learning environment.
The Zara Case Amplifies Safety Worries
The case of 13-year-old Zara Qairina Mahathir, a Form One student found unconscious near her school’s dormitory in Sabah on 16 July 2025, has reignited national concern over school bullying. Details suggesting she may have been a victim of repeated harassment have emerged, prompting a reopened criminal investigation and calls for prosecution under the newly enacted anti-bullying legislation that carries penalties of up to 10 years if a victim dies as a result.
More than 80 witnesses have been interviewed, and 124 fellow students are now receiving psychological support following the incident.
Bullying Remains Widespread
-
Data from the Education Ministry reveals that 5,703 students were involved in bullying incidents in 2024, slightly down from 5,891 in 2023.
-
A UNICEF Malaysia survey previously showed that approximately 1 in 3 students aged 13–17 had experienced some form of bullying.
These figures underscore ongoing concerns about school safety and student well-being.
Child Disappearances and Parental Anxiety
While rare, child disappearance cases further compound parental stress:
-
Between 2021–2023, annual reports show 594 cases in 2021, 902 in 2022, and 779 in 2023.
-
Cumulatively, 3,847 children went missing from 2020 through September 2024, with 96% safely recovered, reflecting the emotional toll these cases carry.
Growing Concerns Over Social Anxiety
Mental health professionals, including the Malaysian Mental Health Association, note that social anxiety and school avoidance have become more pronounced since the pandemic. Many young students find large classroom settings overwhelming, leading parents to seek calmer, more personalised learning environments.
In-Home Academic Programmes: Structured, Safe, and Growing in Appeal
These programmes often feature:
-
Structured timetables and lesson plans, complete with learning objectives and assessments.
-
Tailored pace and content to suit individual learners.
-
Vetted educators, offering both academic reliability and safety assurance for families.
Importantly, while once considered expensive, these services are becoming more affordable, supported by flexible packages and localized service options.
Parent Perspective
“I used to worry about my daughter’s safety when she had to travel for extra classes,” said Aisha, mother of a seven-year-old.
“Now her teacher comes to our home, and I can see her learning in real time. It’s structured, professional, and she’s more motivated than before. For me, it’s peace of mind.”
